Heaven Hill Distillery, Scout & Scholar Release Special Edition Barrel Aged Imperial Rye Saison

Reclaimed Reward celebrates two Bardstown-based businesses committed to craft and celebrating community

Scout & Scholar, in partnership with Heaven Hill Distillery, will release the limited edition Reclaimed Reward on Wednesday, Nov. 24. Heaven Hill Artisanal Distiller Jodie Filiatreau and Scout & Scholar Brewer Lee Northcutt developed the Imperial Rye Saison to complement the notes of the Evan Williams Square 6 Bourbon. To celebrate the new partnership, Filiatreau and Northcutt will be at Scout & Scholar in Bardstown on Nov. 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for a tasting of the final product.

“Heaven Hill’s commitment to premium innovation and quality goes beyond just our own production process. Our partnership with Scout & Scholar showcases the attention to detail that is shared between our two crafts,” said Filiatreau. “Reclaimed Reward celebrates the best of our first bottled Bourbon from the artisanal distillery at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, Square 6.”

Reclaimed Reward pays homage to the innovative craft process at both the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience and Scout & Scholar. Using the same rye grain as Square 6, Northcutt drew inspiration from the flavor profile of the High Rye Bourbon to develop a brew outside the norm for a barrel-aged beer. The resulting flavor highlights the vanilla notes of the barrel while the addition of cardamom draws out hints of the same notes in Square 6. At 10% ABV, Reclaimed Reward is a smooth, well-rounded pour that marries together the best flavors of each product.

“When adding beer to a bourbon barrel, you try to enhance the flavors without any being too overwhelming. Reclaimed Reward was an experimental risk that paid off with a flavorful, balanced product,” said Northcutt. “We are thrilled to partner with Heaven Hill Distillery and bring the newest barrel-aged beer to Bardstown.”

The limited release of Reclaimed Reward will be available at Scout & Scholar as well as the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience as a 500mL for $25. Scout & Scholar will also showcase the barrel-aged beer in a flight experience alongside the base beer and Square 6. For more information, please visit https://scoutandscholar.com/.

Heaven Hill Brands, Louisville Grows partner to plant trees in West Louisville Neighborhoods

The event is part of Heaven Hill’s ongoing commitment to enhance the local community in which their business and their employees work and live

LOUISVILLE, KY. (November 12, 2021) – Heaven Hill Brands and Louisville Grows joined today for a tree-planting event in Louisville’s Russell neighborhood on Friday, November 12. Together, the organizations helped plant more than 60 trees throughout West Louisville.

Heaven Hill has a long-standing commitment to enhancing the local communities in which their employees work and live through both charitable donations and partnering with neighboring organizations. The November tree-planting is one of many initiatives throughout the year where Heaven Hill is cultivating thriving communities through their environmental sustainability commitments, including conserving the ecosystems that support the business.

“For the past twenty years, our Bernheim Distillery has been located right here in the neighboring California neighborhood,” Heaven Hill Brands Environmental Sustainability Manager Rachel Nally said. “Throughout these years we’ve been proud to partner with our neighbors and community leaders to help support local organizations and make a lasting impact on our city. Having a great partner like Louisville Grows allows us to continue to build on that mission.”

Louisville Grows – a Louisville-based environmental nonprofit organization – aims to foster green, just, and sustainable communities by advocating for health equity through the environmental platforms of urban forestry, urban agriculture, and urban sustainability. One area of great focus is the company’s neighborhood-based urban forestry program that focuses on building the urban tree canopy with a goal of planting 1,000 trees each year.

The urban heat island effect is most strongly felt in neighborhoods lacking a significant tree canopy, like the Russell neighborhood, where the tree canopy coverage is significantly lacking. The tree canopy coverage in the Russell neighborhood is only 21%. A 40%+ tree canopy coverage is necessary to reduce urban heat island temperatures to a specific range, and to reduce stormwater runoff by a projected amount.

“Having a partner like Heaven Hill helps us to continue to forward our missions together for the betterment of our communities,” Louisville Grows Program Director Lisa Dettlinger said. “Today, we were able to plant enough trees in West Louisville to grow our tree canopy and enhance mitigation agaisnt the damaging effects of an urban heat island.”

Statement on Contract Ratification

Heaven Hill is grateful to learn the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 23-D ratified a new five-year contract with Heaven Hill. We look forward to welcoming our team members as we transition back to normal operations. The agreement continues Heaven Hill’s long-standing commitment to its team members with industry-leading health care, wage growth and increased schedule flexibility.

Heaven Hill Brands Bartender of the Year Program Selects Final Winner for Craft Meets Community Award Program

The track winner receives a mentor experience and $5,000 to support a health- and wellness-focused initiative within their community

Mara Bethel of Atlanta was announced as the final winner of the Craft Meets Community Initiative (CMCI) $5,000 award to support a community-based project aimed at health and wellness. Bethel will also receive one-on-one mentoring sessions with track leaders Alex Jump and Lauren Paylor, co-founders of Focus on Health.

Bethel, whose hospitality career spans more than a decade, is also a certified Mental Health First Aid Provider focused on strengthening mental health support networks in the hospitality industry through the lens of mutual aid. Inspired by her work in this area, Bethel submitted a proposal to train more service industry workers in providing community-based care to create safe work environments in hospitality. Mental Health First Aid courses provide tools for early intervention, de-escalation, and support for mental health/substance challenges and crises. Through the support of the CMCI award, Bethel and one other service worker can be certified instructors, with the remainder going towards launching and expanding the program around Atlanta.

“A critical component of this training is creating safer environments that are tailored to personal needs. It is a person-forward approach with the knowledge that everyone has unique experiences and needs. Accordingly, everyone’s wellness plan is unique,” said Bethel. “Within hospitality, I see a need for advocacy that is person-focused first and foremost. We’re building strong communities in hospitality with strong networks of support!”

First announced in May 2021, CMCI is an extension of Heaven Hill and Liquor.com’s Bartender of the Year program, developed to provide greater access industry-wide to education, mentorship, and leadership engagement opportunities. CMCI replaces the typical competition structure for 2021, creating a platform for virtual education and conversation structured through four tracks led by industry experts and open to all hospitality professionals. The program was designed to encourage hospitality professionals to take action within their community and participants were also invited to apply for the optional CMCI Award Program where they will have the opportunity to receive one-on-one mentoring from an industry expert and $5,000 to fund their community-based project within their focus area.

The final track in the series, Health and Wellness, focused on the crisis within the hospitality industry of taking care of others before yourself. Jump and Paylor led a seminar entitled “Self-Service: Hospitality and Your Wellbeing,” which detailed best practices for addressing issues and steps of implementation surrounding five pillars of wellness: mental, physical, social, environmental, & financial. Sponsored by Deep Eddy Vodka and Dubonnet Rouge, Bethel created a lower ABV cocktail that can be enjoyed as a decompression time later in the evening, the Garnet Sour. Her take on this was inspired by treating yourself to something enjoyable everyday (see recipe at end of release).

“Mara’s project stood out to us primarily due to her attention to detail and her clear vision of the bigger picture,” said Jump and Paylor. “She was detail oriented in presenting a solution and had a clear direction for the project as a whole. Lastly, her proposal was one that felt feasible for both a local community as well as a larger scale project.”

More than 176 hospitality community members registered to participate in the health and wellness track. Bethel was ultimately identified as the award recipient for this track based on her desire to expand Mental Health First Aid within her community. Bethel will now be supported by the CMCI award money and one-on-one mentorship opportunities with Jump and Paylor to grow her initiative. To get more involved with Mental Health First Aid, please contact bartender@heavenhill.com.

Heaven Hill Brands’ Bartender of the Year program has supported the growth, education and awareness of the hospitality community since 2016. The Class of 2020 Finalists received a combined $40,000 to be split between each after the competition pivoted midway through the reginal semifinals tour to a virtual format. All eight joined the ranks of esteemed past winters: Justin Ware in 2019, Harrison Ginsberg in 2018, Nathan O’Neill in 2017, and Abigail Gullo who won the inaugural competition in 2016. Visit the official Bartender of the Year website at http://www.bartenderoftheyear.liquor.com for complete program details.

Garnet Sour

  • 1.25 oz Dubonnet Rouge
  • .75 oz Lemon Juice
  • .5 oz Pear Eau-de-Vie
  • .5 oz Red Amaro
  • .25 oz Fig Leaf Syrup
  • 12 Sprays of Absinthe (in atomizer or absinthe rinse)
  • Star Anise

Instructions:

Add lemon juice, fig leaf syrup (recipe below), pear eau-de-vie, red amaro, and Dubonnet Rouge into a mixing tin. Add ice and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Double strain through fine mesh strainer into a chilled coupe that has been rinsed/sprayed 6 times with absinthe. Top with 6 more sprays of absinthe and 1 whole star anise. Sip and take a minute for yourself.

Fig Leaf Syrup Recipe: Wash 10 fig leaves and cut into small strips (measuring to 1 cup of packed cut leaves). Bring a medium pot of water to boil. Set up an ice bath for shocking the fig leaves. Blanch the fig leaves and shock in the ice bath. Allow the blanching water to cool- you’ll be using it! Purée the blanched leaves with 1/2 cup of cooled blanching liquid. Strain through cheesecloth, squeezing out as much liquid as you can to make your fig leaf “tea.” By volume, add equal parts sugar to fig leaf “tea.” Blend and refrigerate until ready to use.

Heaven Hill Brands Bartender of the Year Program Selects Second Winner for Craft Meets Community Award Program

The track winner receives a mentor experience and $5,000 to support an education- and mentorship-focused initiative within their community

Jake Truong-Jones of Sacramento was announced as the second winner of the Craft Meets Community Initiative (CMCI) $5,000 award to support a community-based project aimed at education and mentorship. Truong-Jones will also receive one-on-one mentoring sessions with track leaders Joaquín Simó, founder of Pouring Ribbons in New York, and a partner in Alchemy Consulting and Jeffrey Morgenthaler, award-winning bartender and author.

Truong-Jones, whose hospitality career began in 2013, submitted a proposal presenting an expansion of the nonprofit he founded in 2019, All My Friends Get Fed. The beginning stages of his service provided meal assistance to service industry workers and their families. In an effort to address worker shortages, the nonprofit launched the Sacramento Industry Job Database in 2020, allowing small businesses to post job listings for free. Truong-Jones’ CMCI project will extend his nonprofit to now create All My Friends Get Fed – Job Placement, Training and Mentorship Program. This initiative will be a job training and mentorship system that draws upon the collective experience of service industry workers to train and prepare individuals from the unhoused community and connect them to bar, restaurant, and kitchen jobs. After a successful pilot program in partnership with Saint John’s Program for Real Change, Truong-Jones recognized the opportunity to expand the job training program opportunities in his community.

“This program addresses the needs of two specific communities: the unhoused community in Sacramento, who are ready and able to begin their path back to a self-sustainable life. And second, the bar and restaurant community in Sacramento, who are currently faced with massive worker shortages, and need to hire highly motivated individuals who are both passionate and well prepared to provide top notch product and services,” said Truong-Jones. “We strongly believe that through this program we can help Sacramento heal from the pandemic shutdowns, while at the same time pass along knowledge, service skills and business acumen to elevate the hospitality landscape in our community.”

The program is also designed to encourage hospitality professionals to take action within their community and participants are also invited to apply for the optional CMCI Award Program. Four individuals, one from each respective educational track, will receive one-on-one mentoring from an industry expert and $5,000 to fund their community-based project within their focus area.

The second track in the series, Education and Mentorship, focused on knowledge and skills that serve and uplift individuals and communities through training and discussion around opportunities for growth and development for all bar professionals. Simó and  Morganethaler led a seminar entitled “The More You Know: Sharing Knowledge in the Bar Community,” which detailed their experiences as industry leaders on how to effectively grow a team through communication by exploring how to listen, learn, and distill information. Sponsored by Elijah Craig Bourbon and Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur, Truong-Jones also crafted a cocktail inspired by the first cocktail recipe he learned how to build, a Mint Julep. His take on this classic was inspired by nights of discovery and practice, as well as the simple pleasure of a great cocktail after a hard day’s work (see recipe at end of release).

“Jake identified two different communities with urgent needs that are both reeling from the ongoing effects of the pandemic. With incredibly elegant simplicity, Jake’s proposal addresses two different critical gaps (a lack of housing and a lack of trained workforce) with a clear-eyed solution,” said Simó. “This project seems both scalable and replicable, and I hope we can help Jake grow this program to benefit Sacramento and beyond.”

More than 130 hospitality community members registered to participate in the education and mentorship track. Truong-Jones was ultimately identified as the award recipient for this track based on his success thus far with the program and clear vision forward for its growth. Truong-Jones will now be supported by the CMCI award money and one-on-one mentorship opportunities with Simó and Morgenthaler to grow his initiative. To get more involved with All My Friends Get Fed, please contact bartender@heavenhill.com.

Heaven Hill Distillery Announces Release of 2021 Parker’s Heritage Collection Limited Edition Bottling

15th edition of the annual ultra-premium release is an 11-Year-Old Heavy Char Wheat Whiskey, continues the distillery’s commitment to support ALS research and patient care

Heaven Hill Distillery announced today the 2021 limited edition release of Parker’s Heritage Collection 11-Year-Old Heavy Char Wheat Whiskey. The 15th edition will ship nationally beginning in September at an SRP of $139.99.

This edition continues the award-winning series of heavy char releases, exploring how a more intense char allows the liquid to penetrate deeper into each barrel stave and the effects on the resulting flavor. Comprised of 75 barrels charred for one minute and 30 seconds (Level 5), as opposed to the traditional 40 second char (Level 3) for Heaven Hill, the Wheat Whiskey reached peak maturation after 11 years on the sixth floor of Rickhouse Y. The heavy char allowed Heaven Hill’s traditional Wheat Whiskey mashbill of 51% wheat, 37% corn, and 12% malted barley to interact more with the oak, extracting a mix of sweetness, filled with hints of molasses and butterscotch. This release is only the second time the Wheat Whiskey mashbill has been featured in the Parker’s Heritage Collection, with the first released in 2014 as an Original Batch Cask Strength.

The third heavy char edition of the series advances the study of premium innovation at Heaven Hill Distillery through the Parker’s Heritage Collection. The 14th edition featured Heaven Hill’s traditional Bourbon mashbill aged in a heavy char for ten years, garnering “Best Small Batch Bourbon” in the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and 2021 ASCOT Awards, as well as receiving the “Innovation Star” from the SIP Awards. The 13th edition featured Heaven Hill’s traditional Rye Whiskey Mashbill aged in heavy char barrels for eight years and was named a “Top 100 Spirit” rated at 96 points from 2020 Ultimate Spirits Challenge. Bottled at 122 proof (62% abv) and non-chill filtered to preserve all the flavor compounds, this Whiskey showcases the broad range of Heaven Hill Distillery’s 1.9 million barrels of aging inventory.

“The Parker’s Heritage Collection is a testament to the distilling legacy at Heaven Hill Distillery and the detailed attention each step of the process receives,” said Susan Wahl, Vice President, American Whiskies at Heaven Hill. “We are excited to release the third mashbill in this heavy char series, showcasing the consistency of quality throughout our innovation pipeline. It is in tribute to Parker and his legacy that we continue to support ALS research and patient care with this collection.”

The late Heaven Hill Master Distiller Parker Beam, for whom the acclaimed series is named, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also called ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 2010. The past eight editions from 2013-2020, including the “Promise of Hope” Bourbon, the “Original Batch” Straight Wheat Whiskey, the Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey, the 24-Year-Old Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon, the 11-Year-Old Single Barrel, Orange Curaçao-finished Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Heavy Char Rye Whiskey, and Heavy Char Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, respectively, have raised more than one million dollars toward ALS research and patient care through contributions made by Heaven Hill for each bottle purchased. With the 2021 Heavy Char Wheat Whiskey edition, Heaven Hill will again contribute a portion of the proceeds from each bottle sold to the ALS Association.

Packaged in the same upscale 750ml bottle as the previous fourteen editions, but with a taupe label, the newest Parker’s Heritage Collection is available in a three-bottle case and will be available at retail starting in September. With previous releases having won multiple awards from Whisky Advocate magazine, Whisky Magazine and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the series stands as some of the most critically lauded American Whiskeys in recent memory.
