Heaven Hill Brands, Louisville Grows partner to plant trees in West Louisville Neighborhoods

The event is part of Heaven Hill’s ongoing commitment to enhance the local community in which their business and their employees work and live

LOUISVILLE, KY. (November 12, 2021) – Heaven Hill Brands and Louisville Grows joined today for a tree-planting event in Louisville’s Russell neighborhood on Friday, November 12. Together, the organizations helped plant more than 60 trees throughout West Louisville.

Heaven Hill has a long-standing commitment to enhancing the local communities in which their employees work and live through both charitable donations and partnering with neighboring organizations. The November tree-planting is one of many initiatives throughout the year where Heaven Hill is cultivating thriving communities through their environmental sustainability commitments, including conserving the ecosystems that support the business.

“For the past twenty years, our Bernheim Distillery has been located right here in the neighboring California neighborhood,” Heaven Hill Brands Environmental Sustainability Manager Rachel Nally said. “Throughout these years we’ve been proud to partner with our neighbors and community leaders to help support local organizations and make a lasting impact on our city. Having a great partner like Louisville Grows allows us to continue to build on that mission.”

Louisville Grows – a Louisville-based environmental nonprofit organization – aims to foster green, just, and sustainable communities by advocating for health equity through the environmental platforms of urban forestry, urban agriculture, and urban sustainability. One area of great focus is the company’s neighborhood-based urban forestry program that focuses on building the urban tree canopy with a goal of planting 1,000 trees each year.

The urban heat island effect is most strongly felt in neighborhoods lacking a significant tree canopy, like the Russell neighborhood, where the tree canopy coverage is significantly lacking. The tree canopy coverage in the Russell neighborhood is only 21%. A 40%+ tree canopy coverage is necessary to reduce urban heat island temperatures to a specific range, and to reduce stormwater runoff by a projected amount.

“Having a partner like Heaven Hill helps us to continue to forward our missions together for the betterment of our communities,” Louisville Grows Program Director Lisa Dettlinger said. “Today, we were able to plant enough trees in West Louisville to grow our tree canopy and enhance mitigation agaisnt the damaging effects of an urban heat island.”
