Health Tips for Managing Mental & Physical Wellness

Controlling Stress and Anxiety

Turning on the television – or the radio – or just looking at your phone can stir up quite the frenzy of emotion these days.  While it is important to stay up to date on all of the latest information regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19), fear and anxiety often lead to high levels of stress on individuals.  Keeping stress under control is vital to not only your mental health, but your physical health as well.  Some physical symptoms can include:

  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns
  • Worsening of pre-existing health problems
  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs

The following chart from the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services provides some simple tips to alleviate anxiety during this time.

While you should be honest and open about Coronavirus (COVID-19) with the younger members of your household, it is best to limit their exposure to media coverage.  Symptoms of anxiety may emerge differently in children or teens and can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint.  Some specific behavioral changes to keep an eye out for include:

  • Returning to behaviors they have outgrown
  • Unhealthy eating or sleeping habits
  • Difficulty with concentration
  • Avoidance of activities enjoyed in the past
  • Unexplained headaches or body pain
  • Use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs
