Distilling Leadership & Industry Insights at JBBI Annual Conference
I was honored to represent Heaven Hill on the “Distilling Leadership” panel at the James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits’ annual conference last week, sharing the stage with Brown-Forman President and CEO Lawson Whiting and Suntory President and CEO Greg Hughes. While we may compete in the marketplace, our industry has a remarkable way of coming together when it matters most—to support the broader spirits community and shape its future, together.
Our panel focused on the big questions facing the industry today. While recent headlines suggest we’re navigating a challenging moment, we were united in our belief that this isn’t uncharted territory. We’ve faced headwinds before, and I’m confident we’ll come out stronger – so long as we continue to evolve with intention.
At Heaven Hill, that means staying true to who we are while adapting to what’s next. I shared how we’re focused on authenticity, transparency, and consistency for our brands while adapting to shifting consumer preferences. As a family-owned and led company celebrating 90 years this December, we take a long-term view in how we build our brands, invest in innovation, and navigate industry changes. Heaven Hill’s independence allows us to make strategic decisions that prioritize quality and sustainability over short-term market fluctuations, ensuring that generational growth and success.
When asked how we’re preparing for what’s ahead, I emphasized the importance of knowing our consumer. Today’s drinkers are more discerning than ever, and while premiumization remains a powerful growth driver, we’re seeing a clear move toward values-driven premium choices. To stay ahead of those shifts, we’re investing in data science and analytics across our business – deepening our understanding of both consumer behavior and broader industry trends.
We also discussed hot button topics like non-alcoholic and THC beverages, as well as the changing tariff landscape. While non-alc is growing quickly, I noted that it still represents a very small portion of the total beverage alcohol category. At the same time, global expansion presents an exciting opportunity-particularly for American Whiskey and Tequila, two categories where we see strong international momentum. Of course, navigating tariffs and policy shifts remains a challenge, but we’re positioned to manage those complexities with sound strategy, a long-term lens, and working with our trade association partners.
