Earth Day 2022
This month on April 22nd, we will be celebrating the 52nd annual Earth Day! Earth Day was created by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson with the intention of it being a single-day nationwide environmental teach-in. He hired a grad student and activist, Denis Hayes, to be the national coordinator. Together, they created the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, in which over 20 million people flooded the streets in what to this day has been the largest single-day protest in human history. Since then, the mission of Earth Day has been to “diversify, educate, and activate the environmental movement worldwide, all year long” (source). Every year, Earth Day focuses on a new theme—this year’s theme is “Invest in Our Planet.”
