John Okken Blends Canadian Whiskey with Collaboration

John Okken Blends Canadian Whiskey with Collaboration

In a quiet room lined with samples and years of expertise, John Okken does more than blend Canadian Whisky: He balances precision, instinct, and teamwork. For 17 years at Heaven Hill’s Black Velvet Distillery in Lethbridge, Alberta, John has built a path defined not only by craftsmanship, but by the people alongside him.

John began in barreling and warehouse operations. From the start, though, he had his eye on blending. Seven years later, he moved into the blending department, where he has now spent almost a decade doing what he loves.

“I wake up every day excited to come to work, because I love my job,” John said.

Today, John works alongside three blenders and two blenders-in-training. Collaboration is constant. Over time, the group has developed what John describes as a sixth sense, staying aware of one another’s work and stepping in without hesitation when needed.

That connection extends beyond the production floor. The group has built genuine friendships and often gathers outside of work for simple traditions like Thursday evening dog walks.

“We all have a common goal, and we work together,” John said.

Those relationships make the day enjoyable, but they also strengthen the final product. Projects like Black Velvet Reserve and Toasted Caramel Whisky, two of John’s favorites, showcase the skill and creativity that first drew him to blending. He is currently readying the four new premium, age-stated Velvet Collection whiskies for launch later this year, a challenge that continues to energize him.

John credits Heaven Hill’s leadership and culture as a major reason his experience has been so fulfilling. Through the Spirited Commitment, ideas are openly shared and thoughtfully considered. The blenders taste together, talk through adjustments, and approach challenges collectively. That environment of trust and respect has elevated both the quality of the Whisky and the strength of their relationships. Whether creating new blends or addressing an unexpected issue, the group relies on one another. That consistency and mutual support have turned coworkers into close friends.

“Working with John means never working alone. He brings a wealth of knowledge, reliability and team spirit. He’s always willing to step in whenever needed to ensure the job gets done. His dedication and friendship make him someone you’re grateful to work with every day, making him the perfect example of Thriving Together,” Tracy Smith, Black Velvet Blender, said.

Looking ahead, John is clear about the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

“Integrity on the job is important,” he shared. “I’m always striving to do the best I can in a way where my team also enjoys working alongside me.”

After almost two decades at Black Velvet, that commitment to integrity, collaboration, and craft continues to shape the Whisky he produces and the people he is proud to stand beside each day.
