March Holidays and Observances

The month of March is a time we recognize women for their valuable contributions to history and society and celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility.

In 1987 Congress designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month,” celebrating the contributions women have made to the United States and recognizing the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

Holi
Holi, the annual Hindu and Sikh spring religious festival observed in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, is celebrated by throwing colored powder and water. Bonfires are lit the day before in the memory of the miraculous escape that young Prahlada accomplished when demoness Holika carried him into the fire. It is often celebrated on the full moon before the beginning of the Vernal Equinox as based on the Hindu calendar. Hola Mohalla, a Sikh festival, takes place a day after Holi.
