Say Hello to Rachel Nally, Environmental & Sustainability Manager
Hello Heaven Hill: Monthly Employee Q&A Series
Say hello to Rachel Nally, Environmental & Sustainability Manager for Heave Hill. Rachel is responsible for developing and improving the environmental and sustainability plan for the company. Check out the series of questions below to learn a bit more about Rachel.
How long have you been part of the Heaven Hill family?
Just over six months.
What’s inspiring you in life right now?
My 14 month old daughter. I want her to grow up in a world where we don’t ask more of our planet than it can give, where racial and socioeconomic injustices aren’t a part of everyday life, and where world peace isn’t a pipe dream. If that is the sort of world I want for her, then I have to participate in the hard work that it will take to get us there.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t waste time with regrets. Learn from your past decisions, and then move on.
Tell us about an organization or cause you are passionate about.
The Food Literacy Project is a Louisville non-profit that provides farm-based experiential education and entrepreneurial youth development programs, especially for underserved youth. In a time of great concern about the safety of our food sources, rising obesity and diabetes rates, as well as the cultural disconnection between our food and the earth, the Food Literacy Project offers experiential education programs that foster healthier children, healthier communities, and increased respect for the land.
What’s your favorite time of day?
Sunset. It’s time to settle down, relax, and appreciate the beauty of the skies. And, no matter how the day went, a fresh start will come tomorrow.
What’s one ingredient you put in everything?
Cheese. Give me all the cheese.
A skill you’re working on mastering?
This may sound cliché in the time of coronavirus quarantine, but I have been baking bread for about 5 years now, and I’m working on expanding my repertoire. I have my weekly whole wheat sandwich loaf down pat, and I always make a crust from scratch for pie or quiche. But I’d love to be one of those bakers who can whip up a batch of rolls or a pizza crust on a Saturday without looking at 10 recipes first.
What 3 people living or dead would you like to make dinner for?
Wendell Berry, Gillian Welch, and Barack Obama. Maybe all at the same time—that would make for great conversation. They are all still living, so I can keep my fingers crossed!
What’s your favorite pastime?
Hiking. I love getting outside and experiencing the beauty, peace, and solitude that nature has to offer us.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know your coworkers through the first of many employee Q&A session to come. Each month we plan to randomly choose a group of employees to interview for the series. Stay tuned for the July edition!
