The Value of Volunteering
The Mayo Clinic identifies 6 benefits of volunteering. Included are not only ‘sense of purpose’ but also the following.
Social
Meet others and develop new relationships
Spirituality and Volunteering
Volunteering also recognizes the value to embrace a sense of purpose for old and young alike. Typically, we choose volunteer opportunities that express our beliefs with organizations that align with our overall values in life. Volunteering also touches the other dimensions of our well-being.
Emotional
Decreases risk of depression and reduces stress levels
Emotional well-being is the ability to accept and express your feelings. Everything from gratitude to sadness! Volunteering helps us to understand and support our struggles as we relate to the struggles of others. Not from a sense of pity but compassion and caring.
Occupational
Teaches valuable skills
What a great team building practice. Get one or two friends and find a volunteer time, or set up a corporate volunteer opportunity. This is also a great way to use your talents to share in the community and enhance your skills. And don’t think parenting and keeping a house isn’t an occupation!
Physical
Stay physically and mentally active
Environmental
Typically, when I am discussing environment it is personal or family space. While that is important to your overall well-being, you can also impact the community environment you live in and enhance your understanding of the importance of nature to your well-being.
