Water & Emissions Focus Areas

Learning More About Heaven Hill’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy

Now that we have introduced Heaven Hill’s new sustainability strategy and the four focus areas of that strategy, we will concentrate on the first two focus areas—water and emissions.

Water

Water is most obviously key to everything we do. From farmers having water to support the growing of the grains, to the water we use to cook and ferment the grains, to the water that is used to cut our product to its final proof, it is fundamental to everything we do. Manufacturing our products is a water-intensive process, so our target in this area will be to reduce our water consumption. Heaven Hill will do this by being more thoughtful and efficient water users and by finding unique opportunities to recycle water within our processes.

Emissions

There are many types of air emissions, but we will be focused on carbon emissions. Carbon emissions contribute to climate change, which is undeniably one of the most critical challenges facing not only our company, but humanity, if we do not act to slow it. The farmers who grow our grains are particularly impacted by the extreme weather conditions that climate change brings, which include drought, severe heat, and flooding.

Heaven Hill’s target in this area will ensure that we reduce our carbon emissions enough to do our part to keep the global temperature increase under 2°C. This is the level the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has marked as the threshold that temperatures must remain below for the planet to avoid the worst climate disasters in the coming decade. We will do this by focusing on efficiency in our plants and identifying opportunities to use or support renewable energy. These actions will be our first step toward a carbon neutral future.
